GOBO's AND SHADOWS
First we were shown a few advertising templates that we will later insert our images into for the second part of the project. I.e. This M.A.C template.
Tools:
- Spotlight and stand
- Black boards
- camera (canon 700d)
- tripod
- 80mm lense
- cellophane
- gobos
- Honeycomb lights and stands.
The lighting set up of the day was a spotlight with a perfect circle that can attach stencils which was set up directly over the model's head with black boards to block any light hitting the sides of the face. Honey comb light shades were set up behind the model which is good for showing detail in the hair and adding extra light to the front of the face. The focus of todays lesson was to be able to create a shadow on the model to make writing on the advertorial standout and show dynamic techniques of how lighting can help shape the placement of text and colour of text on an advert.
We were then told about the practical for the day: practicing with GOBO's which are thin metallic discs with many different patterns which create light and shadows across different parts of the face when inserted over the spotlight. Using coloured cellophane to cover half the light that is the projected on to the face can allow for the image to focus on the lips or eyes. Light directly behind model only works for beauty shots and creates a texture and contrast. Breathing on the lense can make the focus on the camera softer.
Here are some examples of the photography and lighting set ups we practiced today in class. This technique could be a possible choice for my final images on my editorial shoot if I can find a light pink cellophane to create a lighter appearance on the skin as well as making the model seem happy and like she is enjoying herself. However if I do not use this type of lighting in my final piece it has been very useful knowledge that I can look back on and use in future projects.
