ADVERTISING VS. EDITORIAL:


  • Fashion is about selling a lifestyle through clothes, accessories, makeup and hair.
  • Fashion is often aspirational.
  • Beauty follows the same rules as fashion.
  • Editorial photographs don't tend to have product placement whereas advertisements do.
  • commercial photography sells a product.
  • fashion photography sells a lifestyle.
  • editorial photography sells a story.


WHAT DOES BEAUTY ADVERTISING PHOTOGRAPHY SELL?


  • Commercial is all about selling the product.
  • convincing the viewer they can't live without that particular item.
  • persuading the public to go out and purchase that must have product.
  • less is more, the focus needs to be in on the makeup and model - effortless.
WHAT IS EDITORIAL?
  • editorial and editorial beauty is concerned with a theme.
  • it can be supported by text to tell a story.
  • But it has to have a strong narrative structure regardless of whether or not text is relevant.
  • Editorial formats include printed magazine, an e-zine or online blog format.
  • Editorial photography covers a wide range of styles and genre 'not selling stuff, selling dreams'
  • Images are used to support text in and editorial.
