Seminar 1 - Sharon (Notes)

Constructing a beauty advertisement:

A BREIF HISTORY OF BEAUTY AND ADVERTISEMENTS.

In 1909 Mr Selfridge opened his first makeup store and counters to women in a department stores a new method of selling -try before you buy. This became a trend by 1920.

In the 1920's illustrations were used for adverts that had lots of narrative. Explaining how to use the products. similarly to Rimmel London's adverts today.

In the 1930's makeup became more refined and a Hollywood influence which created an unattainable, sexy and desirable allure to wearing specific makeup brands.

In the 1940's Cream eyeshadows and lipgloss formulas had been developed by Max Factor. Women were encouraged to buy lipstick and send the men at war lipstick covered letters.

The 1950's was classed as the 'golden age of makeup'. Television commercials began promoting brands and creating advertorials. They used Icons that women could look up to such as Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor. This era was the rise of the model - seeing women become the face of a makeup brand in adverts.

The 1960's was the rise of the supermodel i.e. Twiggy. pastel hues were the theme along with the new trend of fake lashes.

When creating an Ad you must think:

  • WHAT IS THE AD TRYING TO DO?
  • WHO IS THE INTENDED AUDIENCE?
  • WHAT STRATEGIES ARE USED TO SELL THE PRODUCT?
  • HOW DOES THE AD ATTRACT THE READERS ATTENTION?
